Demand for engineers who can ship inside customer environments is still outrunning supply, and the market is pricing it like a revenue role, not a support role.
The FDE market is now two markets
Perspective AI's 2026 FDE compensation report — 1,200 data points from Levels.fyi, pay-transparency filings, and Glassdoor — confirms what offer letters have been hinting at all year: "forward deployed engineer" is one title covering two very different markets.
At the top: frontier labs. Mid-level FDEs at Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google DeepMind land $385K–$510K TC; staff level runs $750K–$1M; principals clear $1.2M. The catch is that 60–70% of that is private-stock equity — up from 35–45% in 2024 — liquid only through annual tender offers, and a correlated bet on AI valuations holding.
Below that: everyone else. Palantir's classic FDSE — the role that invented the category — has a median TC of $215K. Fortune 500 enterprise AI teams pay $190K–$420K with shallow equity. Same job description, 2–3.5x pay gap, and the entire delta sits in equity, not base. OpenAI staff base ($370K) is only 2.5x Palantir mid-level base ($145K); total comp spreads to 5x.
The practical read: at frontier labs, equity grant size is the only number worth negotiating. Everywhere else, fight for base and bonus. And model your offer at a 40% valuation drawdown before you believe the headline number.
