The number
292. That's how many open Forward Deployed Engineer roles a new Rung census counted across public job boards in July — median band $197K–$294K, topping out at $390K plus equity. But the number under the number is the one to write down: the same role goes by at least four different titles. If you only search "Forward Deployed Engineer," you miss Palantir's 36 "Deployment Strategist" openings and OpenAI's "AI Deployment Engineer" reqs entirely. The market is bigger than the search bar makes it look.
What changed this week
The Plank census is still frozen — same observed: 2026-07-04, same count of 1,206 — now for the fifth snapshot running. So the movement, again, is composition, not headcount. And this week the board did one thing loudly: it kept pushing the FDE title out of tech and into the professions.
Real estate got an FDE. JLL — a Fortune 500 commercial-property firm — posted a Staff FDE at $150K–$280K in Chicago. Property management is now bidding for embedded engineers.
So did law. Norm Ai calls its seat a "Legal Engineer — Forward Deployed": a lawyer who ships and supervises AI compliance agents for clients managing $30T in assets, at $175K–$225K. The FDE model is colonizing the licensed professions.
And oversight itself. Transluce — a nonprofit eval lab — is paying frontier-lab money ($310K–$500K) for an FDE whose "customers" are the EU AI Office and civil-society partners. Deployment work where the deployment target is AI governance.

One insight: the FDE interview tests what the job description hides
The most useful finding in that Rung census isn't the pay — it's the gap between what the postings advertise and what the loops actually test.
Read the 292 descriptions and they sell breadth: 98% emphasize customer-facing work, 59% mention APIs and integrations, 42% Python, 42% travel. What they barely mention is the fundamentals — data and SQL show up in only ~34%, algorithms in about a third. So candidates prep for the job as written: stakeholder stories, integration war stories, a polished customer narrative.
Then the loop hits. Every FDE interview I've seen still runs live coding and SQL under time pressure, plus an open-ended customer case. The description tells you the job; the loop tests the fundamentals it never spelled out. Show up with great customer instincts and rusty SQL and you'll fail the seat you're most qualified to hold.
The good news is who this role is for: 62% of the open roles are mid-level or IC — not staff, not principal. You don't need 15 years to break in. But you do need to prep two tracks at once: rehearse the customer case and keep your SQL and data-structures sharp enough to write under a clock. Prep the loop, not the posting.
