The number

$4B. That's the committed capital behind the OpenAI Deployment Company — a new majority-owned venture, seeded by OpenAI plus 19 outside investors and run by private-equity firm TPG (with Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield co-leading, and Bain & Company, McKinsey, and Capgemini signed on as integration partners). Its first move: acquiring Tomoro, a Scotland-based applied-AI consultancy, for ~150 forward-deployed engineers on day one — a team already running production AI for Tesco, Virgin Atlantic, and Supercell. The FDE stopped being a job this week and became an asset class.

What changed this week

The Plank census is still frozen — same observed: 2026-07-04, same 1,206 count, now five-plus weeks static — so the signal is composition, not headcount. Two moves stood out from the manual frontier-lab and Glassdoor spot-check:

  • The FDE is turning inward. Two of this week's new listings are internal FDEs, where the "customer" is the company's own org, not an enterprise account. X-energy — a small-modular-reactor builder — is hiring Forward Deployed engineers to embed its in-house APEX agentic-AI platform with its own engineering, manufacturing, and regulatory teams. It's the first nuclear-vertical FDE on the board, and it isn't alone: semiconductor giant KLA is running the same play in Ann Arbor. The title is becoming the standard job description for "get our internal AI platform actually adopted."

  • The Big-4 are badging FDE roles by AI vendor. Deloitte's public-sector arm dominated the week's Glassdoor hits — ~24 of 95 — with "Forward Deployed Engineer — GPS" reqs named explicitly per partner: Palantir, Databricks, OpenAI, Anthropic, Snowflake, AWS. We don't list SI staffing roles, but the pattern is real: FDE is now a standard delivery-pod SKU inside the systems integrators.

New roles

X-energy — Software Engineer V, Forward Deployed Gaithersburg / Rockville, MD · $195K–$220K The board's first nuclear-vertical FDE. Embed the in-house APEX agentic-AI platform with X-energy's own reactor-engineering, manufacturing, and regulatory teams. The "customer" is internal — this is FDE as change agent inside heavy industry. View role →

Federato — Senior Forward Deployed Engineer Remote (US) · $160K–$200K + equity Own the full lifecycle deploying Federato's RiskOps platform into insurance carriers — discovery to production. A fully-remote senior seat in a vertical (insurance AI) that quietly keeps hiring FDEs. View role →

Camunda — AI Process Forward Deployed Engineer Remote (US) · comp not disclosed Camunda's first FDE cohort, embedding agents into its ProcessOS orchestration layer with enterprise customers. Ground floor of a new practice at an established process-automation company. View role →

HappyRobot — Forward Deployed Engineer New York (Hybrid) · comp not disclosed Deploy freight-and-logistics voice agents with brokers and carriers. YC-backed, Series B, $62M raised — an FDE seat at the center of the logistics-automation wave. View role →

Machina Labs — Forward Deployed Engineer Dayton, OH (On-site) · comp not disclosed Robotic sheet-metal forming on the factory floor. An on-site, hardware-adjacent FDE — proof the role now reaches physical manufacturing, not just SaaS. View role →

Citi — Forward Deployed Engineer, AI Transformation (Director) New York · $170K–$300K A director-level FDE inside a global bank, embedding with business units to ship AI into workflows. The internal-FDE model reaching Wall Street. View role →

Redpanda Data — Forward Deployed Engineer, US Remote (US) · $194K–$229K Embed with customers deploying Redpanda's streaming-data platform into production pipelines. Data-infrastructure FDE with one of the cleaner disclosed bands on the board. View role →

One insight: the FDE is turning inward

For two years the Forward Deployed Engineer had one job description: embed with a customer and ship software inside their walls. Palantir wrote it, the frontier labs scaled it, and the whole market assumed the "customer" was always someone who signed a contract. That assumption broke this month.

Look at who's hiring internal FDEs now. X-energy wants one to embed its APEX agentic-AI platform with its own reactor engineers. KLA is doing the same across its semiconductor business units in Ann Arbor ($111.9K–$190.2K + equity). Citi is staffing a director-level "AI Transformation" FDE to wire AI into a bank's workflows. Unity posted a Principal FDE last month pointed entirely at its own Finance, Legal, and Ops teams. None of these has an external customer. The "account" is the company itself.

Why it's happening: every large org just bought or built an internal AI platform, and platforms don't deploy themselves. The gap between "we have an agent framework" and "a business unit actually uses it in production" is exactly the gap the FDE was invented to close — it just turns out the gap exists inside companies too. Comp lands lower than frontier-lab TC (these bands run $110K–$300K, base-and-RSU heavy) but the work is the same discovery-to-production arc, minus the airport.

If you like the FDE motion but not the travel, the internal seat is the underpriced version of the job — and it's showing up in industries software people rarely search: nuclear, semiconductors, banking.

One ask

Reply with your comp. We're building a Forward Deployed salary dataset — base, equity, level, vertical (bonus if it's an internal FDE seat, since those bands are the hardest to find). Anonymous, aggregated, and it makes every future issue sharper.
