The number
$280K–$320K. That's the base band on Anthropic's new Staff Forward Deployed Engineer posting (NYC, SF, Seattle, about 25% travel), verified open on Anthropic's Greenhouse board. It sits roughly $80K above the $200K–$300K Applied AI seat the lab posted two weeks ago, and the $40K spread on this one is tight: they know who they want. Staff is where FDE pay stops being a negotiation and starts being a price.

What changed this week
The Plank FDE census is moving again: 1,276 postings observed Oct 30, up 14 (+1.1%) from 1,262 on Oct 18. That follows the 5.3% dip we flagged last week, so the early read is a flat market, not a falling one. Only the alphabetical head of the file is readable so far, so this is a headline, not a company-level trend.
Two moves in that head are worth knowing:
Anthropic now has 8 FDE records, up from 7. The new one is the Staff seat above; a GTM Strategy & Ops FDE role at $270K–$310K is also listed, though we haven't verified it on Anthropic's own board.
Wide bands at the top. Baseten lists an FDE (Training) seat at $200K–$400K and an FDE seat at $165K–$330K; Aiuc lists $200K–$400K. These are census-reported ranges we couldn't confirm on the employer pages, so read them as signal, not as offers.

One insight: two datasets, one $216K median
Last week's number was the Levels.fyi US median for an FDE: $216,250, self-reported by people who took the job. This week a second, independent method lands in the same place. Nasser Ghanemzadeh analyzed 74 US FDE postings that print a salary range, collected Oct 12, and found a median midpoint of $216,104. Posted bands, not self-reports, same answer within $150.
That agreement is worth more than either number alone. It says the middle of the market is stable, and it gives you a way to read everything around it:
The middle half is wide. Half of all posted roles fall between $170,000 and $242,500. A $72K gap for what's nominally the same job means level and employer decide the offer, not the title.
Seniority pays a premium, but not a cliff. His senior median midpoint is $216,104, the same as the overall median. Staff and principal posts jump to $250,000. Anthropic's $280K–$320K Staff band sits above even that, which fits the lab-premium pattern.
The extremes are real, and different in kind. The range runs from $90,000 (a Palantir bottom-of-band) to $445,000 (an OpenAI Forward Deployed Security Engineer top-of-band).
Two caveats. These are posted base ranges, not offers or total comp, and they exclude equity and bonus. And the analysis comes from someone who runs an FDE services firm and discloses that one of the 34 providers he prices is his own. His job-posting numbers are sourced and the method is public, but he has a commercial interest.
What it means for you: if a recruiter's number sits below $216K, you are bargaining against the middle of two independent datasets. Above $250K, you're in staff-and-lab territory, and the question becomes equity.
