The number
10,000. That's how many "Frontier Deployed Engineers" Anthropic says its new Claude Frontier Academy will train by the end of 2027, backed by $100M in initial funding. Gartner's Mukul Saha puts the number of working FDEs today at roughly 2,000, with demand "probably quadruple that." The market just stopped treating FDE as a rare hire and started treating it as a manufacturing problem.

What changed this week
The Plank FDE census is still frozen at its Sept 12 observation (fifth straight week), so there's no census diff to report. Our own sweep of frontier-lab careers pages found the moves instead:
OpenAI is now hiring FDEs in five cities. New postings for London (plus a Spanish-speaking variant) and Seoul join SF, New York and Tokyo. All hybrid, 3 days a week in office, up to 50% travel, no bands published. Staffing by customer geography and language is a tell: the deployments are already ahead of the bench.
Cursor has five FDE postings live. SF/NY/Remote, EMEA (London), Japan/Singapore, Australia/Singapore/Japan, and India (Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai). None publish pay. A coding-agent company building a field team across three continents is a signal that enterprise rollouts, not the product, are now the bottleneck.

One insight: the supply side of the FDE market just got built
For two years the story was demand: AWS put $1B into an FDE unit, Microsoft $2.5B, OpenAI's deployment company launched with $4B, and Google Cloud posted 59 distinct FDE roles in May. October's story is supply.
Anthropic's Claude Frontier Academy ($100M, 10,000 engineers by end of 2027) has a first cohort from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk. AWS has launched FDE credentials built around three pathways: ground, orchestrate, prove. Gartner counts roughly 2,000 working FDEs today.
Two readings. Optimistic: the entry door widens, and employers finally have a way to verify skills. Cautious: a certificate is not a deployment. DXC promised tens of thousands of Claude-trained engineers and had 86 working in 57 customer environments as of July 31.
What it means for you: the premium will go to people who can show shipped work in a customer's environment, not badges. Expect the title to stratify. Frontier-lab and applied-AI seats keep their equity-heavy comp; the integrator tier fills with certified-and-trained engineers at services pay. On our board, 12 of the 17 roles added since Oct 5 publish no pay band at all.
If you're eyeing a switch, build one deployed, evidence-backed project this quarter. That is what the credential can't fake.
