The number

23. That's roughly how many forward-deployed-titled roles OpenAI was running across its two career boards as of early September — up from a handful when it announced the "billion-dollar FDE" venture in May, and now split into dedicated Healthcare and Legal tracks plus Deployment Company reqs in five regions (per Aced/Exponent and Paraform's role tracking, Sep 2). The story inside that number isn't just volume, it's shape. Labs have stopped hiring "a forward deployed engineer" and started hiring an FDE for oncology workflows, for legal drafting, for the Tokyo enterprise book. Verticalization is what a function looks like when it graduates from experiment to staffed org — and it's happening at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google at once. For candidates, the read-through is concrete: your domain is now a first-class qualification, not a footnote. A backend engineer who knows how a hospital bills, or how a law firm reviews a contract, is suddenly the most competitive FDE profile on the board.

What changed this week

The Plank census itself was static — no re-crawl since the Sep 12 observation, so the week-over-week diff is zero by construction. The signal came from the manual careers pass, and it was a good one:

Anthropic's forward-deployed org graduated from a founding-hires cluster into a fully staffed function. Its Applied AI board now carries geo-specific FDE seats (US, Paris, Munich, London, Tokyo), a management layer — Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering in both NYC and London, plus a Manager, Technical Deployment for Financial Services — and programmatic scaffolding like a Pre-Sales Program Lead for FDE and Technical Deployment Leads on two continents. The "one of our founding FDEs" language that defined H1 postings is being replaced by named managers and regional benches.

Buy-side finance in London is quietly standing up its own FDE benches. This week's UK pass surfaced forward-deployed reqs at Barings, Janus Henderson, and BNY (Manchester) — asset managers seating engineers next to PMs, analysts, and traders. If one of them publishes an employer band, it's the clearest sign yet that the FDE title has jumped from AI labs to the people who buy from them.

Roles worth a look

One genuinely new listing hit the board this week — Anthropic's London FDE, up top. The rest are standout roles still open and, in my read, underrated: disclosed bands, real verticals, and a pay spread that makes this week's point on its own.

Anthropic — Forward Deployed Engineer · new this week London, UK (hybrid, 25–50% travel) · £200K–£300K (employer-provided) The rare Anthropic req that publishes a real band — and at ≈$260K–$390K it lands above the US posting's $280K–$320K base. It's the EMEA financial-services beachhead of an FDE org that now runs named managers and regional benches (see above). View role →

Alteryx — Forward Deployed Engineer Remote (US) · $203K–$300K (employer-provided) A 25-year-old analytics vendor posting a $300K FDE ceiling that tops most frontier-lab IC floors. "Alteryx One" rebrands the desktop-workflow company as an AI-data-architecture shop, and the senior remote-US FDE is its wedge back into Snowflake/Databricks/BigQuery accounts. Proof the role isn't just a startup phenomenon. View role →

Chalk — Forward Deployed Engineer New York / San Francisco (on-site) · $170K–$280K A $50M Series A (Felicis) feature-platform company paying frontier-adjacent money for FDEs who build data pipelines behind cancer detection, fraud prevention, and recommendations. A band that wide on a team this early means genuine ownership per deployment. View role →

Luminai — Forward Deployed Engineer, Team Lead New York, NY (hybrid) · $190K–$270K The same maturation Anthropic is showing at scale, in miniature: a YC-backed workflow-automation startup hiring a management-track FDE — still uncommon on the board — to run field-driven product direction across healthcare, finance, and telecom deployments. View role →

Assort Health — Forward Deployed Engineer San Francisco / New York · $155K–$210K + equity The $1.2B healthcare voice-AI shop — 210M patient interactions, the only healthcare name on the 2026 Enterprise Tech 30 — is staffing the field org, not just R&D. FDEs own health-system go-lives end to end: EHR and telephony integrations, agents handling thousands of daily patient calls. View role →

Cognition — Deployed Engineer, Federal Washington, DC / San Francisco · $95K–$132K base The Devin maker is standing up a dedicated Federal group, and this is a foundational cleared-delivery seat (prior government experience required). Put the modest base next to the number up top: even the ~$26B autonomous-coding leader needs a human on the last mile into government. The equity and ground-floor federal scope are the case, not the cash. View role →

Seamflow — Forward Deployed Engineer London (on-site) · comp not disclosed A London FDE pointed at the physical world — aerospace, healthcare, energy — not another support chatbot. The cap table is the tell: a 14x-oversubscribed $4.5M seed backed by Coinbase, Reddit, Klarna, and Spotify. Wants a product engineer who ships to prod day one and runs the customer call themselves. Visa sponsorship and relocation covered. View role →

One insight: Anthropic is building an FDE org chart, not just hiring FDEs

Six months ago, every Anthropic forward-deployed posting opened with some version of "you'll be one of our founding FDEs." This week, that language is nearly gone from its board — and what replaced it is more revealing than any single req.

Anthropic's Applied AI org now reads like an org chart. There are geo-specific FDE seats in the US, Paris, Munich, London, and Tokyo — each wanting native-language, deeply local hires rather than a remote generalist. Above them sits a management layer: a Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering in both NYC and London, and a Manager, Technical Deployment dedicated to Financial Services. Around them is the scaffolding a function needs to run at scale — a Pre-Sales Program Lead for FDE, Technical Deployment Leads in the US and London, an Associate Solutions Architect in London. This is no longer a cluster of individual contributors reporting into whoever will take them; it's a structured motion with regional benches, a pipeline from pre-sales to production, and its own middle management.

The London req is where you can see the strategy priced. It publishes £200K–£300K, employer-provided — one of the few Anthropic FDE bands that isn't "not disclosed" — and ≈$260K–$390K sits above the US posting's $280K–$320K base. Anthropic is paying up to plant a senior FDE inside the EMEA financial-services market, the same market where Barings, Janus Henderson, and BNY are quietly standing up their own FDE benches. The buyer and the seller are staffing the same function on opposite sides of the table.

For anyone tracking where this role is going: "founding FDE" was the story of 2025 and early 2026. "FDE org chart — with managers, regions, and verticals" is the story now. The founding seats are getting scarcer; the durable careers are being built inside the structure that's replacing them.
