The number
324 of 411. That's how many open Forward Deployed Engineer postings, across the market Rung tracked this month, sit at just three companies — Databricks (120), Palantir (115), Salesforce (89) — out of 13 employers analyzed. Three enterprise-software incumbents, not the frontier labs everyone talks about, own 79% of the volume. If you're job-hunting FDE roles by "AI lab" instinct, you're fishing in the smaller pond; the biggest one belongs to enterprise-software companies that have been running deployment teams for years.

What changed this week
Board moved 313 → 321 — the biggest weekly jump since early August, all eight adds curated and verified.
OpenAI ran the Anthropic playbook, and ran it faster. Two weeks after Anthropic's FDE org-chart story broke, OpenAI posted the same three moves in a single week: two brand-new vertical seats (Legal-NYC and Healthcare-SF, both $185K–$300K), a standalone Tokyo seat, and — the real headline — a Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering role in NYC paying $302K–$385K + equity, the richest confirmed FDE-adjacent band on the board. Management arrived at both frontier labs inside the same month. That's not a coincidence; it's a maturity signal, industry-wide.
Four non-lab companies joined the board, each a different flavor of the same trend. Scaled Cognition (Khosla-backed, betting against the LLM-wrapper playbook with a model it calls "deterministic"), OpenRouter (the default LLM-routing layer, posting its first infra-native FDE seat — routing and caching, not agent-building), Strala (a Founders Fund-backed insurance-claims agent startup claiming multi-seven-figure year-one ARR), and Kong (the API-gateway company running a full FDE ladder through Senior Staff, $200K–$300K). The role keeps spreading past "AI company," into infra, insurance, and API tooling.

Roles worth a look
All eight roles below joined the board this week.
OpenAI — Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering · new this week New York, NY (hybrid, ≤25% travel) · $302K–$385K + equity The richest band on the board right now — and it's a management seat, not an IC one. 10+ years required, 2+ managing customer-facing engineers. Proof the FDE org at OpenAI now has a real ladder above "founding member." View role →
OpenAI — Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Legal-NYC · new this week SF / NYC (hybrid) · $185K–$300K + equity OpenAI is cloning its FDE org by vertical now, not just by geo — a dedicated legal seat alongside a brand-new Healthcare req and an existing Semiconductor one. Legal-tech background preferred, not required. View role →
OpenAI — Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Healthcare-SF · new this week San Francisco (hybrid, up to 50% travel) · $185K–$300K + equity Same band as Legal, but 6+ years required and real Epic/HL7/FHIR fluency demanded — a tell that OpenAI is staffing this vertical with domain experts first, engineers second. View role →
Scaled Cognition — Forward Deployed Engineer · new this week Mountain View, CA (onsite) · comp not disclosed Founding FDE seat at a Khosla-backed startup betting against the prompt-and-pray playbook entirely — co-founded by ex-Microsoft VP Dan Roth and UC Berkeley professor Dan Klein, built on a model they say "reasons deterministically." View role →
OpenRouter — Forward Deployed Engineer · new this week SF Bay Area (onsite, customer travel) · comp not disclosed The default LLM-routing layer for a huge slice of the indie/startup AI stack just posted its first FDE seat — and it's unusually infra-native: routing, fallback, caching, cost optimization, not "build agents." View role →
Kong — Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) · new this week US Remote (ladder to Staff/Sr. Staff in NJ/TX) · $200K–$300K (Glassdoor, Staff+ levels) The API-gateway company every backend engineer has run into now runs a full FDE ladder. Kubernetes and Terraform migrations, not prompt engineering — infra-company FDE in its purest form. View role →
Strala — Forward Deployed Engineer · new this week San Francisco, CA (in-person) · top-quartile + equity, band not disclosed Founders Fund-backed insurance-claims agent startup claiming multi-seven-figure ARR in year one — fast enough traction that it's hiring an FDE to own deployments instead of leaving it to the founders. View role →
OpenAI — Forward Deployed Engineer, Tokyo · new this week Tokyo, Japan (hybrid, 3 days/week) · comp not disclosed OpenAI's first standalone Tokyo seat, requiring bilingual Japanese/English fluency — mirrors the APAC build-out Anthropic already ran and Sierra runs today. Not remote-from-anywhere; a bet on a Tokyo-based practice. View role →
One insight: what the interview loop is actually screening for
Rung's September pass through 411 open FDE-flavored postings is the closest thing to a hiring-loop x-ray this market has had. The headline number: 98% of listings explicitly call out customer-facing work — not "nice to have," a hard screen. Pair that with 79% requiring travel or on-site presence, and the pattern is obvious: FDE interview loops are built to filter out engineers who want to stay behind a laptop, not to test algorithms.
The technical bar is real but narrower than you'd guess. 77% of postings ask for Python specifically — not "a language of your choice" — and 64% want AWS/GCP/Azure experience. Only 30% require a US security clearance, which tells you the defense/federal FDE seat is still the exception, not the rule, despite how much attention it gets. 54% of all postings are mid-level, so this isn't a senior-only club either.
One more tell: the title itself is fragmenting. "Forward Deployed Engineer" accounts for 251 of the 411 postings — barely 60%. The rest hide under Deployment Strategist (71), Forward Deployed Software Engineer (61), and AI/Deployment Engineer (28). If you're only searching "forward deployed engineer," you're missing roughly two in five roles doing the same job under a different name.

One ask
Forward this to one engineer who'd want the $302K–$385K number in their inbox. The best new subscribers come from a colleague hitting forward, not an ad. One send, and next week's issue reaches someone who needed it.
