The number

$348K. That's the top of the band Optum — part of UnitedHealth, the largest healthcare company in the US and #3 on the Fortune 500 — is now paying for a Forward Deployed Engineer to embed with payers and providers and ship AI into claims and care workflows. When a Fortune 5 posts an FDE ladder, the title has fully escaped tech. The frontier labs invented this role; the rest of the economy is now bidding for it.

What changed this week

The composition of postings has moved hard toward enterprise and vertical seats:

  • The FDE title hit the Fortune 5. Optum (UnitedHealth) posted a Remote/Eden Prairie FDE at $203–348K. Alongside it: Kyndryl and Twilio both opened FDE reqs. This is the mainstream absorbing the role, not the labs.

  • The Palantir model is being franchised. Distyl AI — ex-Palantir operators running OpenAI's enterprise deployments — is staffing FDEs hard across healthcare, finance, supply chain and insurance at $150–250K. It's the Palantir FDE playbook reborn as an OpenAI channel.

  • "Forward deployed" keeps leaving software. Zipline wants an FDE reporting to the Head of Operations to wire GenAI into the world's largest drone-delivery network ($113–300K — the widest single band on the board). Vannevar Labs wants a TS/SCI-cleared FDE as the field "CTO" for a defense mission team.

New roles

Optum (UnitedHealth) — Forward Deployed Engineer Remote (US) / Eden Prairie, MN · $203K–$348K The FDE title just reached the Fortune 5. Up to $348K to embed with payers and providers and ship AI into claims and care — the clearest sign yet the role has left tech. View role →

Hebbia — Forward Deployed Engineer New York / San Francisco (on-site, 5 days) · $180K–$300K Sells AI to the buy-side and law firms; band tops out at $300K — among the highest published for a non-founding seat. The strict in-office rule is the tell: you're really the customer's embedded quant. View role →

Distyl AI — Forward Deployed AI Engineer San Francisco / New York (25–50% travel) · $150K–$250K Ex-Palantir crowd running OpenAI's enterprise deployments — "working AI systems within a quarter." The Palantir FDE model reborn as an OpenAI channel, staffed across four verticals. View role →

Vannevar Labs — Forward Deployed Engineer (TS/SCI) Washington, D.C. · $150K–$215K + equity $3M to $80M ARR in three years, profitable, unicorn — the defense-AI story nobody outside the Beltway talks about. The moat is the clearance: TS/SCI shrinks the pool to almost nobody. View role →

Zipline — Forward Deployed AI Engineer, Operations South San Francisco, CA · $113K–$300K The widest band on the board, in a single req, because Zipline wants a "startup CTO inside Zipline" reporting to Operations, not Engineering. FDE meets aviation and logistics at the largest drone-delivery network. View role →

H Company — Forward Deployed Engineer Austin, TX / Paris · $150K–$200K The French agentic-AI lab calls FDE "the fastest-growing job category at H" — it hired a dedicated Head of FDE and is scaling the team. When a frontier shop makes deployment its growth engine, that's the signal. View role →

Warp — Founding Forward Deployed Engineer On-site · Comp not disclosed A founding FDE seat — you build the deployment motion, not inherit it. The rare early role where the equity, not the base, is the whole conversation. View role →

One insight: the FDE market is now three markets

If you're reading offers as one number, you're mispricing yourself. In 2026 the FDE market has split into three distinct tiers, and this week's board has a role in each.

Tier 1 — frontier labs. Anthropic, OpenAI and peers pay roughly $385K at mid-level, $610K at staff, and $1M+ at principal (Perspective AI's 1,200-FDE comp report). But 55–70% of that is equity now, up from 35–45% in 2024 — so "TC" is mostly a bet on the next valuation, not a paycheck.

Tier 2 — the Palantir model and its franchises. Palantir itself sits near a $215K median TC (Levels.fyi); its diaspora — Distyl and firms like it — now runs the same embedded-deployment playbook as an OpenAI channel at $150–250K. Cash-heavier, equity-lighter, travel-heavy.

Tier 3 — Fortune 500 verticals. This is the new one, and it's where the volume is heading: Optum at $203–348K, plus Twilio, Kyndryl, and Thomson Reuters. Comp lands $190–420K, weighted to base and RSUs you can actually value.

The practical move: before you negotiate, name the tier. A Tier 1 "$700K" and a Tier 3 "$300K" can leave you with similar spendable cash — the difference is variance. Pick your tier for the risk profile you want, not the headline.

One ask

Reply with your comp — base, equity, and which tier you'd put yourself in. The salary project only works with real numbers, and every reply makes the next issue sharper.
